| Discovery and Significance of the Late Cretaceous Fish-bearing Biota in the Dayangshu Basin, Inner Mongolia |
| In this paper, the discovery of Peipiaosteidae fishes, teleostean fishes, and amphibian fossils has been documented in the Late Cretaceous Nenjiang Formation of the Dayangshu Basin located in the Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Among these, the Peipiaosteidae fossils include specimens attributable to the genus Peipiaosteus as well as an indeterminate genus within the family. Their distinction, based on differences in skull roof bones and parasphenoids, reflects an adaptive evolution of Peipiaosteidae fishes during the late sedimentary stage of the Dayangshu Basin. This is the first report of the discovery of Late Cretaceous sturgeon fossils in China. Through observation, measurement, description, and systematic morphological analysis of these fossil specimens, the paleoenvironment of two stages has been reconstructed during the later sedimentary period of the Dayangshu Basin. |
