The Environmental Implications of Trace Element in Shells of Living Eucypris mareotica in Tuosu Lake, Qaidam Basin |
The correlation between trace elements in Eucypris mareotica shells and that in the environment was studied by collecting live ostracods and their parasitic waters from different regions of Tuosu Lake in the Qaidam Basin. The results indicated that no significant linear relationship between the Mg content in the E. mareotica shells and the water or temperature. At the single temperature, no significant relationship between Li/Ca ratios were observed in E. mareotica shells and temperature, while Mg/Ca ratios in E. mareotica shells display a positive correlation with temperature. Living E. mareotica shells at the entrance of the Dalian River into Tuosu Lake, whose Mg/Ca ratios decreased significantly with increasing temperature, indicated that the Mg/Ca ratio in E. mareotica shells is controlled by at least two environmental factors: temperature and salinity. Compared with the distribution coefficient KD(Mg), the correlation between KD(Li) and temperature was more pronounced, as the temperature increased, KD(Li) decreased gradually. A quantitative conversion formula between KD(Li) and the temperature was established based on data fitting. The steady trend of Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca in E. mareotica shells was consistent with the stable salinity of water, indicating that the Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios can be used to predict salinity changes in Tuosu Lake. A strong positive linear relationship was observed between Mn/Ca ratios and water depth, and a quantitative conversion formula was established for water depth based on the Mn/Ca ratios in E. mareotica shells. The quantitative conversion formulas for water temperature and depth can provide a foundation and reference for the quantitative reconstruction of the paleoclimate in Tuosu Lake. However, quantitative conversion formulas require verification and improvement by collecting more living E. mareotica and parasitic water samples, and undertaking indoor cultivation experiments under more precise, extensive temperature and salinity range conditions to provide a reliable substitute indicator for the quantitative reconstruction of the paleoclimate in the Qaidam Basin and Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. |
