An Analysis of Sedimentary Facies and Sedimentary Environment of Mesoproterozoic Sandstone in the Baijiayan Area of Yuntaishan UNESCO Global Geopark, Henan |
The Yuntaishan UNESCO Global Geopark in Henan Province is a typical representative of layered canyon landforms in the South Taihang area. A set of purple quartz sandstones of the Yunmengshan Formation in the Mesoproterozoic developed in the Geopark constitute the major typical representative landscape-building strata, which are widely distributed in the Taihang area, named “red beds in Taihang Mountain”. The aesthetic value is extremely high, and in the beds, a large number of cross bedding, ripple marks, and mud-crack sedimentary structures are developed. Based on field observations and regional geological data analysis, the authors focused the study on the Baijiayan profile. Rock sampling in different locations, element analysis, thin slice analysis, and sedimentary facies analysis were carried out. Based on these items of evidence, the authors investigated the sedimentary environment of the Yunmengshan Formation. The results show that the purple quartz sandstone of Yunmengshan Formation in the Baijiayan area was formed in a coastal beach-tidal flat sedimentary environment. The Yuntai Mountain was in a state of frequent turbulence and overall uplift during the Mesoproterozoic period. This research not only provides important information for revealing the Mesoproterozoic paleogeographic environment and evolution history of the Yuntai Mountain area, but also helps to improve the science education function of the Geopark and increase public interest and hobbies in geological sciences. In the other hand, these researches will benefit the economic and social transformation of Jiaozuo area. |
