Research and Development Progress as well as Technical Orientation of the Natural Gas Hydrate in Japan
      Japan is a resource-scarcity country that highly depends on the import energy. Exploitation of the natural gas hydrate as a new energy is an important part of Japan’s energy strategy. Japan has conducted three national research and development (R&D) programs of the natural gas hydrate since the 1990s. The survey and evaluation of the natural gas hydrate in Japan’s surrounding sea areas and the development of the production-test technology based on depressure method and the environmental monitoring system have been basically accomplished. Japan has also conducted two rounds of production tests with partial success. Japan’s R&D has insisted on the top design, started a commercial company, established the union of R&D and enhanced the international cooperation for promoting technological innovation of the natural gas hydrate. Japan expects to achieve commercialized production before 2027. China is the world leader in production test of natural gas hydrate. However, it is also important to draw upon Japan’s experience on R&D of the natural gas hydrate for driving the industrial process of the natural gas hydrate.
