Land-marginal Reefs and Building Conditions in Carbonaceous–Permian Strata, Southern Inner Mongolia |
A lot of land-marginal reefs have been recently discovered in the Carbonaceous-Permian strata in southern Inner Mongolia, which include the Amushan Formation, Sanmianjing Formation and Linxi Formation. On the basis of detailed study of reef-strata, faces sequences and reef-built conditions, three land-marginal reef-built systems have been distinguished, i.e., land-marginal carbonate terrace, simple volcano-arc system and compound volcano-arc system. According to morpho-textures, palaeo-geographic positions and reef-built machines, these land-marginal reefs could be divided into several types, namely. stratigraphic form reefs, patch reefs, barrier reefs, knoll reefs, taper reefs, tower reefs and column reefs. According to summing up data about stratigraphic characteristics and morphologic functions of reef-built organisms such as blue germs, calcium algae and bryozoan, some palaeo-geographic units of plat-form margins are distinguished, which are off-shore tidal-flat, lagoon, reef-beach barrier, back-arc basin, volcano-arc, alter-arc delta, alter-arc basin and outside-arc. Three spreading models of land-marginal reefs are erected by studying reef-growing on each unit. These results will prove reliable evidence for promoting reef study, restoring land-marginal conditions and tectonic evolution. |
