The Discovery of the “Freezing and Thawing Landform” of Tycho Impact Crater of the Moon |
With the continuous development of lunar exploration, the problem as to whether there exists water or water-ice on the Moon has caused the scientists who carry out the planet and lunar research great attention. Previous studies emphasized the instrumental detection and tiny amounts of lunar sample test. In spite of all the efforts made by these researchers, the results remain unsatisfactory. Based on detailed analysis of high-resolution satellite images of the lunar exploration and the specific geomorphic type of water or water-ice formation, the authors discovered lots of “freezing and thawing landforms” produced by the action of freeze-thaw on the Moon which is similar to things of the earth. The “freezing and thawing landform” mainly includes such types as freeze-thaw solifluction, frost mound, frost ridge, frost cracks, hot melt landslides, and hot melt collapse, and these freezing and thawing landforms are most completely preserved in the Copernican Tycho crater and its surrounding areas. The discovery of “freeze-thawed landform” is of great significance in probing into the problem as to whether there exists water or water ice on the Moon, and also in further research on the evolution of the Moon. |
