New Pterosaur Tracks from the Early Late Cretaceous of Dongyang City, Zhejiang Province, China |
Compared with the osteological record, pterosaur footprints (tracks) are relatively rare. Herein we report on a new pterosaur footprint site from the Fangyan Formation of Dongyang City, Zhejiang Province, China. The sediments are composed of brown-red pelitic siltstones (Fig. 1) and the footprint bed is nearly horizontal. Initially, the Fangyan Formation was assigned to the late Lower Cretaceous (Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Zhejiang Province, 1989), but more recently it has been redated as early Upper Cretaceous (Yu and Xu, 1999; Cai and Yu, 2001). This is the second pterosaur footprint side found in China so far, and it is also the eighth pterosaur footprint site from Asia. Among them, four are from Korea (Lockley et al., 1997; Hwang et al., 2002; Kim et al., 2006; Lee et al., 2008), two from Japan (Fujita, 2008; Lee et al., 2010) and one from China (Li et al., 2006; Zhang et al., 2006). |
