Vertebrate Faunas and Stratigraphy at the Northern Extent of the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota |
Studies of the fossil fish, invertebrates and plants have concluded that similar Early Cretaceous biotas are distributed across Northeast China and as far as the Transbaikalia region of Russia. Since the Yan-Liao area (Northern Hebei and Western Liaoning) has been suggested as the central region for the origin and dispersal of the Jehol Biota, the Transbaikalia and the area of northern Great Xing’an Range should be viewed as the northern geographical extent of the Jehol Biota. Comparison of the vertebrate faunas between these three areas is difficult to carry out. Many tetrapods discovered in Western Liaoning during the last decade have greatly changed our understandings of the composition of the Jehol Biota. But tetrapod fossils of the same age from the Transbaikalia region of Russia are relatively rare, and information of them is still inadequate. Furthermore, no tetrapods have yet to be found from the northern Great Xing’an Range area. Therefore, the vertebrate fauna at the northern extent of the Jehol Biota is poorly known. |
