The Geological Features and Origin of the Tumurtin Ovoo Large-Scale Zinc Deposit, Mongolia |
Discovered in the 1970’s, the Tumurtin Ovoo zinc deposit in Mongolia is a large-size skarn deposit. Ore bodies occur within the skarn between biotite granite and Devonian marble. Zircon dating by using the U-Pb SHRIMP method suggests that the biotite granite was emplaced at 240.9 ± 3.4 Ma, i.e., in early Triassic. Element geochemistry and Nd-Sr isotopes reveal that the biotite granite intruded under the volcanic arc, and derived its materials from the melted younger lower crust. The petrogenetic process of the biotite granite was affected and controlled by partial melting. Based on sulfur and lead isotopic studies, the authors hold that the ore-forming ma-terials were derived mainly from the biotite granite and partly from the Devonian strata. |
