A New Sample Preparation Technology for Determining Tri-oxygen Isotopes in Sulfate by Ag2SO4 Pyrolysis |
Oxygen isotopic composition is a very effective tool to trace the origin and formation environment of sulfate,and tri-oxygen isotopic studies have become a hot and forefront topic with the development of mass independent isotopic fractionation of sulfate. Ag2SO4 pyrolysis was dealt with in this study as a latest technology of sample preparation for analyzing tri-oxygen isotopes(16O,17O,18O)in sulfate.The basic principle is that Ag2SO4 is pyrolysed to O2 and SO2 at 1050 ℃,with the yield of O2 up to 45 ± 7% and SO2 close to 100%. The two kinds of gases can be collected to determine δ17O,δ18O and δ34S by mass spectrometry. This paper described the sample preparation method and steps to convert other sulfates to Ag2SO4 for such samples as water,soil,gypsum and BA2SO4.This is because the special requirement for the method is that all samples must be converted into Ag2SO4. The Ag2SO4 pyrolysis method dose not use the fluorination reagents employed in traditional methods, is hence safer, cheaper and more reliable than traditional means and accords with the environmental awearness and the people-oriented principle. Based on practical experience, this paper points out the advanced nature, good applicability and great popularization value of the new means. |
