The Separation of Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd Using DCTA and HIBA
      A new method for separating Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd has been established for isotopic analysis of geological samples by adopting resin of AG50W×8 and different eluent reagents. Firstly, REE are separated from Rb-Sr in geological samples by using normal method of cation-exchange chromatography with eluent of HCl. Then Rb and Sr are separated and purified by using a mixed eluent of pyridinium and DCTA complex. Sm and Nd are separated and purified by using HIBA as an eluent through a very small volume of cation-exchange resin(0.6 mL). This method improves the separation efficiency and can separate Sr from large amounts of coexisting Mg, Ca and Ba much better than normal eluent of HCI, especially in carbonate. This method also greatly reduces the elution volume and thus lowers the procedural blanks. By using this separation method, an analysis of the international basalt standard of BCR-2 yielded mean 87Sr/86Sr of 0.705018±3 and 143Nd /144Nd of 0.512616±9, which are consistent with those obtained by other separation methods.
