Boron Isotopic Fractionation During the Evaporation of Seawater
      Laboratory experiments were undertaken to investigate the behavior of boron at the seawater-air interface. Seawater adjusted to different pH values was heated at 27℃, 33℃ and 40℃inside a quartz evaporator. The vapor was collected with a quartz condenser using a cold trap. This arrangement is similar to the natural seawater-vapor process under the non-airflow condition but excludes the sea-spray component. The results indicate an enrichment of 11B in the vapor. The implication for the natural environment is that rainfall with lower δ11B values than that of seawater has been affected by continental boron sources or its air mass has been partially depleted in 11B by previous condensation events. The seawater evaporation can not cause an observational variation in the boron isotopic composition of seawater in ancient times.
