Isotope Methods for Studying the Replenishment of the Lakes and Downstream Groundwater in the Badain Jaran Desert |
In this paper, the sources of spring water and well water on the northern side of the Qilian Mountain and in Longshou Mountain, Badain Jaran Desert, Gurinai, Guaizi Lake and Ejina Basin are studied by the methods of environmental isotopes and water chemistry. The groundwater in downstream areas such as Badain Jaran Desert is found to be recharged by the precipitation of the Qi-lian Mountain, with the average recharge elevation being 3 300 m. Lots of naked limestone layers exist at the top of the Qilian Mountain. The melted snow water of the Qilian Mountain infiltrates into the deep layer, passes through the karst strata or large faults in front of the mountain, and directly recharges Badain Jaran Desert and its downstream areas via the Longshou Mountain. The calcareous cement and travertine found in the lakes of the desert prove that the groundwater passes through the limestone layer. Confined water recharges the shallow aquifer by means of leakage. The calculation of the evaporation amount shows that the groundwater recharge volume is six hundred million cubic meters per year, and the age of the confined groundwater is 20~30 years. |
