| The Discovery of Pillow Lavas in Yixian Formation, Western Liaoning, and Its Significance |
| A series of pillow lavas were discovered in such areas as Sihetun and Sanbailong through detailed geological survey. This paper describes characteristics of these pillow lavas. The lavas are intercalations in the sediments containing precious fossils, and occur in the same stratigraphic horizon-2nd Member of Yixian Formation. They represent a disastrous event and reflect the fact that the ancient lake where the pillow lavas were formed was then in the maximum expansion with rather deep water. In this environment, the living beings quickly increased and flourished, while the intense volcanism led to the death of many living things and the formation of abundant fossil assemblages. The discovery of pillow lavas is of great significance in precise determination of the forming age and living environment of the animals and plant fossils. |
