Rapid Strike-slip of the Altyn Tagh Fault at 8 Ma and Its Geological Implications
      The strike slip history of the Altyn Tagh fault was highly related to the uplift and deformation of the Tibetan plateau. This paper mainly presents fission track dating results of apatite from granites near the fault. The fission track dating yields ages concentrated on the 7~9 Ma, with about 2 Ma difference. Regional data also show that 8 Ma obtained by fission track dating of apatite is widely spread along the fault, suggesting a period of rapid strike slip of the fault during this time. Studies of the uplifting and deformation history of the plateau show that many important events, such as the uplift of the plateau, the formation of the NS trending extensional structures in south Tibet, and the climate changes in Asia, occurred at about 8 Ma. Therefore, the authors suggest that 8 Ma was one of the most important periods for the deformation and evolution of the Tibetan plateau.
