The Sedimentary Response to the Evolutionary Process of Caledonian Foreland Basin System in South China |
The sedimentary environment and the tectonic evolution of the cover were more or less affected by the Caledonian tectonic movement. The foreland basin is made up of four tectonic units, namely, thrust, foreland basin, bulge and back-bulge basin. The thrust can be divided into three belts, viz., front belt, middle belt, and root belt. The two stages of Caledonian evolution in South China are Sinian and Early Ordovician rift-passive continental margin subsidence phase and Ordovician and Silurian foreland basin phase. There are two sedimentary sequences from clastic shelf to carbonate platform in the rift-passive continental margin, and the first sequence includes turbid in the fore deep belt, the shale in the back-bulge basin and carbonate in the fore bulge. The fore deep and bulge shifted westwards and towards the platform with the evolution of the basin. The eastern thrust belt is considered to be a typical wedge-top outer fore deep, and the inner fore deep basin belt went through a sedimentary process of the prograding foreland-basin system. The back-bulge basin was formed when early fore deep deposits were subducted beneath the eastern thrust belt and bulge uplift. This shows the control of tectonic setting over the evolution of the basin. |
