摘要:
THE PAST AND PRESENT SITUATIN OF PLATE TECTONIC THEORY AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO ITS DEVELOPMENT BY CHINESE GEOLOGISTS
Prof. Li Chunyu (C. Y. Lee), a famous Chinese geologist, has made great contributions to the study on tectonics of China and Asia. This paper gives a brief introduction to the principles about plate tectonics and its history and evolution, and talks about in particular the contributions to its development by the Chinese geologists in recent years. There are two active plate boundaries in China. One, lying between the Indian and Eurasian plates, is elongated along the Yarlung Zangbo River in South Xizang (Tibet) ; the other lies along the East Taiwan Longitudinal Valley, which is a dividing line between the Eurasian and Philippines plates. According to the Tectonic Map of Asia (on a scale of 1:8000000, by Prof. Li et al. in 1982), the Eurasian plate is further divided into 6 paleo-plates: East European, Siberian, Kazakhstanian, Tarim-Sinokorean, South China-Southeast Asian and Turkey-Central Iron-Gangdise. These paleo-plates-or old massives were not only disconnected until the Carboniferous, but alsa separated far from each other by ocean basins. In the Devonian period, the Laurentian old land collided with the East European platform and consequently the European and North American continents were integrated together into an entirety-Euramerican old land. During the Carboniferous, the-Kazakhstanian paleo-plate collided with the Siberian platform, forming the Angara old land. Almost at the same time, the southern and northern continental paleoplates within China were combined into the Cathaysian old land along the Kunlun-Qinling Mountains. In the Late Carboniferous-Permian, the above-mentioned three old lands were separated by the Ural-South Tianshan-Inner Mongolia ancient ocean basins. Because of the repeated subductions of the latter, the three old lands were collided with each other, resulting in the formation of the Laurasia land. In the middle stage of Mesozoic, the North American continent was separated from the Laurasia by the Atlantic Ocean spreading. During the Jurassic, the Turkish, central Iron, Gangdise and Shan Stat massives disintegrated from Gondwana.collided with the Eurasian old land along its southern margin and the present Eurasian plate was thus formed.Through the contrast between different evolutionary processes of the Eurasia and Gondwana lands, one can see an important tendency of global dynamic action since 400 m. y. -the Gondwana land of the Southern Hemisphere was splitting into several blocks and drifted from one another while the continents of the Northern Hemisphere were combined into the unitary Eurasia Continent by collision.
