SOME NEW UNDERSTANDING CONCERNING THE STUDY OF THE PERMIAN SYSTEM IN CHINA
China is one of the countries where Permian System is well developed, especially South China which is recognized as the most ideal area to study Permian System because of the obvious strata sequence and abundant fossils. As early as 1930s Prof. Huang Jiqing (T. K. Huang), laid a foundation for Permian stratigraphy and paleontology in China and made brilliant contributions. The study has got ahead and gained great progress in the last 30 years. This paper presents some advances concerning some important questions in the Permian study. The Ebinur Lake-Juyan Lake-Solon-Xar Moron River fracture belt, which traverses the Junggar-Hinggan (Xing'an) Area, causes differentiation of lithofacies and faunae along both the south and the north sids of the geosyn-clinal region. It is more obvious along the south and north sids of Solon-Xar Moron River region. In Himalaya-Gangdise Area the lowermost Permian strata are Pangduo Group and Jilon Formation, equivalent to the Nilha Bay Group of Lower Permian in Salt Range, Pakistan. The lower boundary of Permian is delimited at the bottom of gravelly slates of the lower part of those strata. This boundary is identical to that of Gondwana facies in the neighboring countries, but is quite diverse from the traditional division in South China. The Gangdise-Nyainqentonglha Area and Junggar-Hinggan Area are similiar to each other in the characteristics of the faunae and floras and in the regularity of horizontal and vertical distribution, although they are far away from each other in distance. The cold warm type of faunae of late satge of Early Permian (it is corresponding to Middle-Late Maokou Stage) is distributed separately in the inner side of the Solon-Xar Moron River and Yarlung Zangbo River fracture belts, but the warm water faunae of South China type are distributed in the outer side of these two fracture belts, i. e. along the margins of the two continents. In the marine beds of the lower part of Shanxi Formation, in S. E. Shanxi Province, there are faunae with transitional characters of Carboniferous-Permian, such as Pseudoschwagenrina and Chenlla. They are equivalent to the Longyin Formation (in a broad sense) in southwest Guizhou Province, and belong to the early age of Early Permian. The newly established Longyinian of west Guizhou Province contains Propopanoceras and Robustoschwagerina schellwieni. At present, it is the lowest Permian chronostratigraphical unit in our country, whose lowest boundary is the lowest boundary of Permian, too.Between Misellina zone of Qixianian and Robustoschwagerina schellwieni zone of Longyinian, there is a set of strata contains Pamirina and Schwagerina tschernyschewi. These strata should belong to the lower part of Qixianian.Between Kang-Dian land and Zhejiang-Fujian land in Wujiaping Stage of Late Permian in South China, there is Xuefeng land. The differentiation of sedimentary facies took place symmetrically with the part east of Xuefeng Land as the centre. This indicates that the distribution of Late Permian facies in South China is controlled by two lands, namely the kang-Dian Land and zhejiang-Fujian Land.
