Element Composition and Geochemical Characteristics of Co-rich Mn-crust from Johnston Island |

Abstract:A sea mountain Co-rich manganese crust sample taken from the Johnston Island by HY4 in 1987 was analyzed by several advanced techniquas such as XRF, ICP AES, ICP MS, and AF as well as some chemical methods; as a result, the contents of the total 52 major, minor and trace elements(including all rare earth elements) have been determined. In addition, the authors calculated the enrichment factor of each element according to the new element abundance data of the earth's crust. Compared with the marine polymetallic nodule, the crust sample has the following geochemical characteristics: the contents of Co and Pt are relatively high(1.2% and 0.37μg/g respectively) and become the most important elements in the crust resource; the contents of the rock forming elements such as Si and Al are rather low, but the contents of REE are comparatively high(ΣREE>0.15%).These phenomena have attracted many scientists' attention. Besides Mn, Co and Pt, the efs values of several elements such as Mo, Tl and Bi exceed 400 too and these elements can be used as the tracers to study the genesis of the crust and the marine environment. |
