| PROF. XU JIE AND HIS STUDY OF ORDOVICIAN SYSTEM IN S. ANHUI |

| Abstract:Prof.Xu Jie is both a senior geologist and proletarian revolutionary veteran in China. He has made great contributions to the cause of liberation of the Chinese people and to the development of geological sciences in China during a period of over five decades. He joined the Great Revolution in China(1924-1927) ,when he was young. Being engaged in geological activities, Prof. Xu Jie has carried out geological investigations and scientific researches on regional geology, structural geology, Lantien tillite, stratigraphy and paleontology in S. Ankui. His particular success was achieved in the study of Ordovician system and graptoJites in the same region. On the occasion of 85th anniversary of Prof. Xu Jie's birthday, we, the geologists of Anhui Province take the opportunity to express our best wishes to him.A creative and fundamental work for the division of Ordovician system in S. Anhui has been done by Prof. Xu Jie's. The Tanchiachiao, Ningkuo and Hulo shales he established in the years of early thirties are widely adopted. Most of the five graptolite zones and the three subzones he established at that time are still applicable DOW. The data on both formations of Ningkuo and Hulo shales, having been complemented by the researches of later generation, have become standard sections and areas for graptolite-bearing strata of our county.Prof. Xu Jie's shows a rigorous scientific approach to stratigraphic and paleontologic researches. So far, most of the nearly one hundred species of Qrdo-vician graptolites he determined and described have been applied. His monog-raphies and articles are always held in high esteem and often cited by researchers both at home and aborad. |
