Cover Story:Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, established in 1956, is among a small number of academies established on the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It is a geosciences research institution for social public welfare with complete specialized subjects, largest scale and solid technical power, and is also an important component part of the national innovative system. Since its establishment, more than ten thousand scientific re-search projects have been completed, and important geosciences theories such as geomechanics, continental oil generation, multicycle geotectonics and porphyrite iron deposit have been put forward with creativeness, whose guiding role led to the discovery of such large-size deposits like Daqing oilfield, Yuebei (northern Guangdong) uranium deposit, Baiyinchang copper deposit, Dachang tin deposit, Lup Nur potash salt and salt lake lithium de-posit. The academy has been awarded large quantities of prizes, which include 45 National Science and Technology Progress Prizes (including 3 top grade prizes and 7 first-class prizes), 20 National Natural Science Prizes (in-cluding 2 first-class prizes), and 5 National Technical Invention Prizes. The academy has made great contribu-tions to China’s geological work and national economic construction.
