Cover Story:The pure sylvite bed at the top of the 628 m level tunnel, the mining tunnel of the Mengyejing potash deposit in Lanping–Simao basin of Yunnan Province. This sylvite bed is 3~20 cm in thickness and strikes NE20°, with the exposed length being over 30 m. Its sedimentation occurred in the Cretaceous, and it is the only ancient solid potash deposit ever discovered in China. The Mengyejing sylvite bed is comparable with the Carsbad potash bed in Utah State of the USA in modes of occurrence, which suggests that the marine-sourced continental ancient saline lake environment was favorable for the depo-sition of sylvite. The results obtained by the authors provide scientific basis for the study of potash mineralization and the development of potash industry in the study area. The details of the relevant research achievements and progress of the State ‘973’ Plan directed by Professor LIU Cheng-lin, Institute of Mineral Resources, CAGS, see this spe-cial issue.
